Maddie Rose Day

Today, we are showing our support of the Maddie Rose Campaign by adopting its logo for Maddie’s Day!

The campaign aims to shine a spotlight on the vast range of careers with the construction industry and inspire diverse, young talent to access these opportunities.

The initiative was set up in memory of Maddie Rose Hollamby, an inspirational young woman who was dedicated to showcasing careers within the sector and highlight their benefits to other young people, so that they could develop through it as she had herself and reach their full potential.

To honour Maddie’s legacy, the CYT has developed a Hidden Careers Programme in partnership with the wider construction community, which aims to encourage young people and help them access opportunities across the sector.

We actively supported this programme by providing a relatable role model to attend one of their school sessions, at Oasis Academy South Bank, and saw firsthand how much of an impact it can have on the school children.

We invite others to similarly adopt the logo and ‘turn yellow’ for the day to help keep Maddie’s legacy alive!

Matt’s Promotion

“My career at Niblock Electrical started 3 years ago when I joined as a testing engineer. Through training, I completed my SMSTS qualification which enabled me to assume responsibility for all aspects of the health, safety and wellbeing of all persons on site. I was given the opportunity to step up to the role of site manager for one of our large University clients, and with the experience I gained in this role, and through guidance from senior management, I was promoted to my current role as Assistant Project Manager.

I am very grateful for the large amount of trust put in me which has enabled me to reach my current position.

Working with a team you respect makes a challenging job much more manageable. I hope to repay the trust shown in me for many years to come.” Matt Cunningham.

Tools Down Tea Break

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we have encouraged our employees to take part in various activities during the week to help break the stigma surrounding mental health. Today, we invited everyone to take part in a ‘Tools Down Tea Break’ to start a conversation with their colleagues about how they are feeling. Talking openly with others helps to dispel misconceptions about mental health problems and the people who experience them.

Mental Health Awareness Week

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week (10th-16th May), and in conjunction with us becoming a supporter of the mental health charity ‘Mates in Mind’, we have invited our employees to take part in various activities to improve their mental health.

The theme of this year’s awareness week is #Nature. Following the pandemic and the various lockdowns, it has been apparent that going outside and getting some fresh air has a vast impact on the mental health and well-being of individuals. We therefore encouraged our employees to step outside over the weekend, whether that meant taking a walk in the park, sitting outside in the garden or visiting their favorite nature spot. We simply wanted everyone to #connectwithnature. We were delighted that many of the employees participated and sent in photos for us to share!

Mates in Mind

We are delighted to announce that Niblock are joining up with Mates in Mind in order to raise awareness, address the stigma of poor mental health and improve positive mental wellbeing among our workforce and the wider construction industry. Mates in Mind is being delivered in support of the Health in Construction Leadership Group and in partnership with The British Safety Council and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).

As a Supporter of Mates in Mind, we gain access to support and communication materials, as well as a range of awareness and training programmes – helping us to take a joined-up approach to improving mental health & wellbeing. We are focused on better understanding the needs of our employees, whilst ensuring immediately that all our staff have access to trained and qualified counsellors. We recognise that the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have had a vast impact on everyone, and now more than ever we need access to the correct support channels.

We will also be taking part in national events, starting today with National Mental Health Awareness Week (10th-14th May)!
